What studies show, and what they do not

Two findings and three limits from NIH's fact sheets on probiotics, kept side by side and worded close to the source. The longer version, with strain, dose and regulation, is our research note do probiotics work?

What studies show

  1. NIH's consumer sheet says healthy people may get gas from probiotics, while infections and other health problems are rare.

    NIH ODS, consumer fact sheet

  2. Side effects are usually minor: gut symptoms such as gas that settle on their own.

What they do not show

  1. NIH has issued no official recommendations on probiotics for healthy people.

    NIH ODS, consumer fact sheet

  2. Many probiotic supplements contain 1 to 10 billion CFU per dose and some 50 billion or more, but products with higher counts are not necessarily more effective.

  3. One strain's results do not settle the question for others: effects can be specific to certain strains, so recommendations need to be strain-specific.
