What helps bloating fast, naturally? Habits first, then the supplements with evidence

The answer

Start with habits. NIDDK suggests eating slowly, choosing smaller meals and cutting back on fizzy drinks, gum and straws, and the NHS adds gentle exercise and a stomach massage. Of the supplements, lactase (taken before dairy) and alpha-galactosidase (just before beans) act at the meal. Mayo Clinic finds little clinical evidence for simethicone. A probiotic is a weeks-long choice rather than a mealtime one: pick one whose strain was studied for bloating, at the daily amount its trial used.

Key facts

  3. Lactase tablets are taken before milk products; alpha-galactosidase just before a meal.NIDDK; Mayo Clinic

What can you do right now when you feel bloated?

Gentle movement and a stomach massage. The NHS says exercise can help when you are already feeling bloated, and suggests massaging your stomach from right to left to release trapped wind. It also lists drinking plenty of water.

Cleveland Clinic gives the same two moves: a walk, because physical activity speeds the passage of food, waste and gas, and a belly massage that follows the large intestine, up the right side, across and down the left. For the rest of the day, the NHS advises against lots of fizzy drinks and large meals late at night.

"Bloating is where your tummy feels full and uncomfortable. It's very common and there are things you can do to ease it."

NHS, Bloating

People ask this as "how do I fix bloating fast, naturally, and which supplements actually work?" The fast part is mostly habits. Our month of reading public Reddit posts, to October 5, 2026, turned up 379 about bloating out of 1,031.

Which eating habits reduce gas, according to NIDDK?

Slower, smaller and with less swallowed air. NIDDK says doctors may recommend these changes to eating and drinking habits to reduce gas symptoms, and the NHS list matches.

  1. Eat slowly, sitting down

Take your time at meals, and sit at a table rather than eating on the move.

    NIDDK

    Each meal
  2. Smaller, more frequent meals

Several smaller meals in place of larger ones. Mayo Clinic adds smaller portions of the foods that bother you.

    Daily
  3. Less swallowed air

Gum, hard candy, straws and fizzy drinks all add swallowed air, and so does talking while you eat.

    NIDDK

    Daily
  4. Fewer gas-making foods at once

Cabbage, beans and lentils in smaller amounts, fewer fizzy drinks, and no large meals late at night.

    NHS

    Daily
  5. Regular exercise

The NHS says regular exercise improves digestion, and that exercise can also help when you already feel bloated.

    NHS

    Daily
  6. A food and symptom diary

A record of what you eat and drink and when gas follows helps a doctor or dietitian find the foods involved. In Cleveland Clinic's words, "Keeping a diary can help identify whether you have a food intolerance, a frequent cause of bloating."

Cleveland Clinic adds salt to the list, for a different reason: "Excess salt in your diet causes water to build up in your body's tissues. That can leave you feeling bloated." Sodium is also the number to watch in store-bought bone broth; our read on bone broth and gut health lists it per cup.

"Many of the foods that can cause gas are part of a healthy diet."

Mayo Clinic, on trying smaller portions first

How fast should you add fiber?

Over a few weeks. MedlinePlus advises adding fiber gradually over a period of a few weeks to avoid stomach distress, toward 21 to 38 grams a day for adults. The average American eats about 16.

Speed matters because, per MedlinePlus, a big jump in fiber can bring on gas, bloating and cramps. That usually fades once gut bacteria get used to the increase. Water helps fiber move through, so MedlinePlus suggests about 8 glasses of water or other noncaloric fluid a day. Cleveland Clinic puts the rule plainly: "When adding fiber to your diet, do it slowly."

If constipation is part of the picture, the NHS suggests you "eat foods high in soluble fibre if constipated, such as oats or linseed." Which everyday foods carry the most fiber, gram by gram, is in our read on high-fiber foods for gut health.

Which supplements have evidence for bloating?

Two enzymes have the clearest reason to work at the meal, each for one kind of food. A probiotic is chosen by strain and taken over weeks, and the rest have little or no support for bloating.

Peppermint oil capsules show up in most answers to this question; the studies behind them enrolled patients with a doctor-confirmed digestive disorder, which puts them outside this page.

What studies show

  1. In a 2007 trial, 8 healthy volunteers who took 1,200 GalU of alpha-galactosidase with 420 g of cooked beans had less breath hydrogen and less severe flatulence than on placebo.

    Di Stefano et al., 2007

  2. Lactase products break down lactose, which lowers the chance of symptoms from milk products.

    NIDDK

What they do not show

  1. That simethicone relieves gas symptoms: Mayo Clinic finds little clinical evidence.

    Mayo Clinic

  2. That an enzyme helps foods other than its own. The bean trial tested one enzyme with one meal.

    Di Stefano et al., 2007

Do probiotics help bloating fast? Choose a strain studied for it

Not fast, and the strain decides the rest. NIH's Office of Dietary Supplements says a product's health benefits, if any, are determined by the strains it contains and the number of CFUs, so look for one studied for bloating, taken at the daily amount its trial used. Physician's Choice, which publishes this site, puts it this way: for occasional bloating, a well studied probiotic may help.

Speed is a separate problem. A probiotic has no enzyme activity. Johns Hopkins Medicine makes the point directly: probiotics do not break down food, so nothing in a capsule of bacteria reaches the meal you just ate. NIH's Office of Dietary Supplements adds that in healthy people, probiotics may cause gas. This site is published by Physician's Choice, a maker of gut health supplements. It names no product, and none of the habits above needs one. The supplements in the table are general types sold by many makers; check any label for the enzyme by name before you buy. Short answers

How can I get rid of bloating quickly?

The NHS suggests gentle exercise, which can help when you already feel bloated, and massaging your stomach from right to left to release trapped wind. Skip fizzy drinks for the rest of the day. A pharmacist can advise on simethicone, though Mayo Clinic says the evidence for it is limited.

Which supplement acts fastest on bloating after a meal?

The ones taken with food. Lactase goes in before the milk product (NIDDK) and alpha-galactosidase just before a bean or vegetable meal (Mayo Clinic). Each one only helps with its own food, so neither does anything for bloating from other causes.

Do probiotics help bloating?

The answer runs strain by strain. NIH's Office of Dietary Supplements says a product's health benefits, if any, are determined by the strains it contains and the number of CFUs, so look for a strain studied for bloating, at the daily amount its trial used. NIH adds that in healthy people, probiotics may cause gas, and a probiotic is not a fast option.

Could more fiber be the reason I feel bloated?

It can be. MedlinePlus says eating a lot of fiber in a short time can cause gas, bloating and cramps, and that this often goes away as gut bacteria adjust. It advises adding fiber gradually over a few weeks, toward 21 to 38 grams a day.
